Music: Giusepe Ottavio Pitoni
April 28, 2013
The composer of this morning's anthem, Giuseppe Pitoni, was an organist and composer from Perugia, Italy. He became one of the leading musicians in Rome during the late Baroque era, the first half of the 18th century. Pitoni began vocal study at the age of five and sang in a Fiorente choir from age eight. By age sixteen he was maestro of a historic church near Rome, and a lifelong admirer of the works of Palestrina.
We sing this anthem in its original Latin which is paraphrased from Psalm 148, and which has been translated as:
Come ye with joyfulness,
Come sing ye a new song to your Maker.
O praise him with the saintly congregation.
Israel, be joyful and glad in him,
Be glad in him who made Israel,
And children of Sion, ye childen of Sion be joyful.
Rejoice and be glad in your King.
